3DS v2: Increase security; increase conversion
The Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) is a European directive that will change banking and payments. PSD2 is something that all businesses with payments in Europe need to be aware of. This covers many items, including 3D Secure.
The 3D Secure security protocol has worked to protect online transactions, reduce card fraud and chargebacks, but increased drop-offs. This has been available for a number of years and this is now being updated with the introduction of 3D Secure 2.0.
3DS 2.0 is a new standard introduced by EMVCo and credit card schemes. It brings a new approach to authentication through a wider range of data, biometric authentication and an improved online experience. This also includes a number of new data fields that can be passed to help provide a frictionless authentication experience.
How is this going to impact me?
To support this fundamental update, you may need to make some changes to your integration.
Depending on how you have integrated ePDQ will determine the work required to support 3D Secure 2.0.
If you integrate by using hosted payment page, then you will not need to complete any work. We will migrate your 3D Secure service to version 2 for you.
If you integrate using the direct link service (this includes Flex Checkout), then you will need to complete some integration upgrades to support 3D Secure 2.0. The following links provide instructions on what is required to support the direct link upgrades for 3DS Secure 2.0.
If you are unsure which integration you use, then please speak with your IT Team/Developer.
By when do I need to do this?
At present, this will go live in April 2019 and all functions (Issuers, acquirers & Payment service providers etc.) are required to be ready to support 3D Secure 2.0 by September 2019.
However, work is ongoing in preparation for this. Therefore, we will continue to update you via the back office updates with any new details on the upgrades as well as any action you need to take.
